The Ulsan Whale Museum (울산 고래박물관) is a popular tourist destination located in Ulsan, South Korea. The museum is dedicated to the preservation and education of marine life, with a particular focus on whales.
What to Learn
The museum features a wide range of exhibits that showcase the diversity of marine life in the region, as well as the history of whaling in South Korea. Visitors can learn about the different species of whales that inhabit the waters around Ulsan, including humpback whales, minke whales, and sperm whales. The exhibits also feature life-sized models of various whales, as well as real skeletons and preserved specimens.
In addition to its exhibits, the Ulsan Whale Museum offers a range of educational programs and activities for visitors of all ages. There are guided tours, interactive exhibits, and even a 4D theater that allows visitors to experience what it’s like to be in the ocean with whales.
One of the most popular exhibits (and my favorite) is actually located at the experience center which has a section dedicated to dolphins.
The exhibit also includes a tank where visitors can watch live dolphin shows. These shows are educational and entertaining and provide a rare opportunity to see these amazing creatures up close.
The Ulsan Whale Museum also has a strong conservation focus, and actively works to protect marine life in the region. The museum hosts various events and campaigns throughout the year to raise awareness about the importance of marine conservation. It’s important to note that whaling is controversial and has been banned by the International Whaling Commission since 1986. The Ulsan Whale Museum educates visitors on the history of whaling in the region and makes sure to enforce the importance of preserving those animals.
Whale watching
One of the activities that interested me the most about the museum is that they do tours in which you can get the chance to see whales on the coast of Ulsan. They count with boats that travel in four different routes, and if you are lucky enough, you might be able to see these majestic creatures up close.
Prices change depending on the day and route that you decide to take, but you can check their fees on this page.
If you’re planning a visit to the Ulsan Whale Museum know that each part of the complex has a different entry fee. Some other fees are charged in case you want to enter the Ulsan ship or ride the monorail in front of the museum.
The museum also offers discounted prices for seniors and groups.
