Wolgmyeong-dong, the old downtown of Gunsan, has many houses and buildings that have been renovated. Yeomirang, a guest house that has a 1930s style design, surrounded by a mix of contemporary and classic buildings that allow us to have a modern historical experience.
This guest house is located in the ‘Gunsan Modern History Experience Hall’ where you can find some of the other historic sites that you must visit. For example, Goudang, a cafe that is just at the front of this place. So in a residential area, you can see the contrast between the past and present times and find lots of traditional restaurants and cafes, of course.

The past in the present
Along with the modern historical landscape district in Gunsan, Yeomirang is a lodging facility which is rapidly getting popular. So every year, the increasing number of tourists come and stay in this place. Since it is a historical site, every traveler that comes to Gunsan, must experience the vibes of this place at least once.
In the past, this place used to be a Japanese government official’s house for the exploitation of rice. But now, it has become a guest house that reflects on the pain of Japanese colonial era and the history that Gunsan has.
Its name stands for ‘Forgotten, impossible and house’. Which means that the sad history should not be forgotten.
There are several buildings which are made of black woods. They are gathered in a circle with a small pond in the center and are surrounded by some trees and plants. That makes the view picturesque, and you can see some cherry blossoms in spring which makes this place more beautiful.
You will see some tables outdoors where you can sit and have a nice meal while enjoying the nature.
A beautiful pond
The pond is for sure one of the highlights of this place. Since it stands out with the Japanese style buildings in the background, the combo makes the place such a perfect spot to take photos. That is why a lot of tourists who don’t stay in the place visit to look around.
They have a path done by rocks. So you can cross over it.
As soon as you enter, you will find the information center. You can get more information and make reservations as well.
In the front, you will find Goudang which is one of the must visit cafes of Gunsan. Here, you can find vast of drinks, snacks and even souvenirs!
This cafe is one of the reasons to why it is convenient to stay in this guest house. Have your coffee ready every morning before moving on to the next tourist spots that are around.
Before you enter this place, you must take off your shoes. And then you can go ahead and walk through the alley to find your room.
There are 28 tatami rooms. And even if it seems that there is not enough privacy due to the sliding doors, you don’t really need to worry. No one gets to see the inside anyway.
As expected, it looks so elegant thanks to the black wood. But the most interesting thing is for sure that they have kept the traditional design.
Each room is season themed. For example, the spring and fall ones are double rooms. You must check before making your reservation if you have a certain room that you would like to stay in.
What makes it so different from other guest houses is that it has tatami which allow us to experience to stay in a Japanese style house. No wonder why this place has a lot of customers. It is because it has become a historic site, for sure. Since they keep the Japanese architecture. It makes you feel like you are in old times.
The cheapest rooms only include the sleeping pad and a private bathroom. While the fanciest ones, are equipped with kitchen, TV and all the utilities you might need!
They offer different types of rooms. Some of them have kitchen and all the utilities you might need. While others, it is just a basic ondol room.

How to get there:
From Gunsan Station, there are plenty of buses that you can take. You can take bus no. 3, 4, 11, 12, 13, 15 and 16. And get off at the bus stop called ‘월명주민센터(Wolmyeong Residents Center)’. At the first corner, you will have to turn right and walk straight until you find it.
You can take bus no. 17, 18 and 19 as well. And get off at the bus stop named ‘군산여고 (Gunsan Girl’s highschool)’. Here, cross the street and walk through the first alley until you find it.
It is worth staying here since Yeomirang is a place where you can have a modern historical experience.
