Ever wonder where people from Jeju (already a paradise) go to escape? The answer is Gapado. If you go on a vacation to Jeju Island, Gapado is a destination you should not miss. A perfect day trip for those who enjoy nature, it is a calm place full of hidden gems.
Gapado is located about 5.5km from Jeju’s coast. You can get there by ferry from Moseulpo Port in Seogwipo. It is a small place where you can see everything in just a couple of hours. You can either walk around Gapado or rent a bicycle near the port.
Renting a bike goes for between 5,000 and 10,000 Won in cash. And it is worth it to spend your time as best as possible.
Every ticket is bought as a round-trip set. For adults it is 14,100 Won, for teenagers it is 13,900 Won, and for kids it is free. The tickets should be bought at least one hour before departure. Be sure to bring your ID card since it will be necessary to fill out some legal forms in case of an emergency.
The departures from Jeju’s port are at 9 am, 10 am, 11 am, 1 pm, 2 pm, 3 pm, and the last one is at 3:50 pm. And the departures from Gapado are at 9:20 am, 10:20 am, 11:20 am, 1:20 pm, 2:20 pm, 3:20 pm, and the last one at 4:10 pm.
The trip by boat is only around 15 minutes. If you happen to miss the last boat to Jeju, you can stay the night on the island and go back the next day. However, there is limited accommodation on the island. Therefore, I recommend you be careful with your time there if you don’t want to end up stranded overnight
There are not many restaurants in Gapado, but the ones you will find there are mostly seafood restaurants. I did not have the chance to visit one myself, but you can find banners for all of the restaurants on the island near the port.
Two of the foods that are famous on the island are seafood jjajangmyeon and jjambbong. The noodles are made with green barley, and toppings include local seafood and ocean vegetables.
What I did find was a lot of cafes in the area. Most of them, if not each and every one of them, had one thing in common. All of them sell barley flavor ice cream. This is a perfect option if you go during the summer since it will cool you down and help you enjoy the experience. Barley is the island’s specialty product, you will also find lots of barley fields on this tiny island.
Places to See
One thing you will surely, absolutely, and obviously see is a lot of ocean and small beaches. But if you go through the middle of the island, you will get to see a lot of nature. Actually, when I went there last summer, my friend and I decided to take the road through the middle and found a sunflower field, it was beautiful.
Also, we got to see art made of sea shells, either in the walls of the village or along paths. If you continue through the middle path on the island, you will find art in the walls showing the story of Gapado in Korean. There are also paintings all over stores and homes throughout the island.
If you happen to visit Gapado during the hot season, you can also swim a bit at designated beaches.
I believe, just like with any other trip where you are going to wander around, you should wear comfortable shoes and clothes. The Island may be small, but you will still walk around quite a bit.
Bring cash just in case some of the places there don’t accept card payments. And, do not forget your sunscreen and camera. But, most importantly, do not forget to enjoy the moment!
