Weird World of Korean Baskin Robbins

Korean Baskin Robbins flavors are special. Even if you have Baskin Robbins in your home country, it is definitely worth a visit. From ice cream puzzle cakes to potato cheese ice cream, here are a few of the weird and wonderful things you can find at Korean Baskin Robbins.

The American ice cream brand Baskin Robbins enjoys massive popularity in Korea, with stores dotted throughout the entire country. The brand, known by the nickname ‘Bera’, or ‘베라’ is a favorite among Koreans. Friends often compare favorite flavors – each one associated with different personality traits. More interesting still are the exclusive flavors found only in Korea – some of them are really unlike anything I’ve had before, some good and some bad.

Cake!

In my hometown and most of the world, Baskin Robbins’ cake comes in a single flavor accompanied by a fluffy cake base. However, Korean Baskin Robbins cake is completely different. Their ice cream cakes each come with a multitude of different flavors of ice cream. The whole thing is ice cream and usually looks like a puzzle. Each cake is made up of a combination of ice cream slices to form a fun ice cream sculpture.

Flavor of the Month

Also worth noting is the Flavor of the Month at Baskin Robbins’ Korea. They always serve up new, delightful flavors; more often than not being flavor combinations I’ve never seen before.  They often engage in collaborative projects with beloved local snacks. For example, May 2021’s flavor was Ice Home-run Ball, based on Korea’s top-ranked snack. Everytime you go, you can find more weird and wonderful options.

Zzon Tteok Ice Cream

Zzon Tteok is a flavor that leans to the traditional. It consists of black sesame and injeolmi ice cream flavors, both of which are featured heavily in Korean desserts. Additionally, you’ll also find praline pecans sprinkled throughout. This flavor is fairly new – it was originally introduced as a Flavor of the Month before its overwhelming popularity helped it gain a spot on the fixed menu. If you’re looking to try something distinctly Korean even at an international franchise like Baskin Robbins, Zzon Tteok should definitely be your flavor of choice.

Shooting Star

Also worth noting is the Flavor of the Month at Baskin Robbins’ Korea. They always serve up new, delightful flavors; more often than not being flavor combinations, I’ve never seen before. They often engage in collaborative projects with beloved local snacks. For example, May 2021’s flavor was Ice Home-run Ball, based on Korea’s top-ranked snack. Every time you go, you can find more weird and wonderful options.

Love-struck Strawberry

Consisting of a cheesecake base with strawberry and chocolate chunks in it, it’s one of those flavors that everyone likes – the exact opposite of Shooting Star. It is so popular it has gained a nickname, ‘사.빠.딸’ (a shortened version of the name of the flavor). This is the flavor to pick if you are picking up ice cream for someone but aren’t sure what their preferences are. It’s just so hard to hate, and honestly – it’s my personal favorite. I’m secretly hoping they’ll release it in my home country eventually, but until then, I’ll continue picking this up at the store closest to my home here.

Mom is an Alien

Mom is an Alien is another one of those flavors that everyone loves. It consists of milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and white chocolate mousse swirled together with chocolate malt balls. If you think it sounds like something kids would like, you’re right – it’s one of the safest options you can order at Baskin Robbins. The name of the ice cream is truly curious, no one knows the reasoning behind the name, but it does make it unforgettable.

Chocolate Forest

A mix of matcha and dark chocolate ice cream, Chocolate Forest is sure to delight any green tea lovers. Its history as the winner of the 2014 ice cream contest, where consumers voted for their favorites, proves its popularity – it’s been a longstanding favorite since. If you prefer desserts that ‘aren’t that sweet’, you’ll probably love this – the slight bitterness of the matcha is a real palate-cleanser after any meal.

Cheddar Cheese Potato Ice Cream

Cheddar Cheese and Potato ice cream – yup, you read that correctly. The ice cream has both cheddar and potato flavors of ice cream swirled together. You will also find balls throughout featuring a potato center and a sweet cheese flavored outer coating. You’re probably able to guess that this favor is not for everyone. Koreans often enjoy cheese-flavored snacks, but I have to say, this crossed the line.

Beyond just Baskin Robbins, Korea has its own unique ice cream culture. >>Click Here<< to read more about the weird and wonderful world of Korean ice cream.
