Just this past weekend, Yonsei University held their school festival again, AKARAKA, after 2 years. As a Graduate student, unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get the tickets for the main concert, however, it was still a great experience!
Like other school festivals at Korean universities, my university had booths for different school clubs and departments. The purpose of the university festival week is to get students acclimated to student life. They can join clubs and find out what each department offers. But then, at the end of the festival is when the party happens!
There are performances from celebrities on the last day of the festival. Often, there are A-list Kpop stars included in the performances. For Yonsei, they were very secretive about the performers that they invite. People would only know once the performances starts.
On Saturday, Yonsei started the venue admission at noon. Many people started going in as soon as it opened. In fact, many camped out at the standing section in order to get a good view. Since my friends and I did not get tickets, we stood outside of the venue and just listened to the announcements about who will be performing.
The performance started at 4 pm when the student MCs welcomed everyone. We could hear the people in the venue singing Yonsei cheering songs and getting hyped up for the event.
AKARAKA 2022 Performers
It was not until 5 pm that they finally introduced the first guest. Even from outside the venue, we could hear the roar of people as they announced the first guests.
It was no other than the new rising girl group New Jeans! They opened the event with their debut song ‘Attention’ and continued to perform their other three songs.
10CM & Big Naughty
After their performance, it was followed by a performance by one of Yonsei’s Alumni and ballad singer, 10cm. During his performance, he didn’t forget to invite rapper, Big Naughty, on stage. They performed a little bit of the new song that they just released.
Next, Le Sserafim was invited to the stage. It was their debut performing at a school festival. Geared in Yonsei attire, they made sure to perform ‘Fearless’ and ‘Sour Grapes’ on stage. Of course, they killed it!
Winner, IVE ,& Zico
As if the first half of the performers were not good enough, the last 3 performers were welcomed with very loud screams. The last 3 performers were Winner, IVE, and closed by Zico. As the night went on, the screams for each performer became louder and louder. The whole performance went on until 8 pm. Then finally, at the end, fireworks were set up high in the sky.
AKARAKA After Party
After the main concert was over, Yonsei threw an after party in the same venue.
If you do go to a university festival in South Korea, I would recommend going to their after party. It was a showcase of the Yonsei spirit. Led by the iconic Yonsei’s cheering squad, the people in the venue gathered to sing every cheering song that Yonsei would chant out in tournaments. Regardless of which department you are from, the students all go hand in hand while singing the school cheering songs, showing the university’s unity. It was a great way to end such a spectacular night.
So, if you have to choose, which school festival in Korea would you like to go to?
