The black chicken is called Ogolgye in Korean. It is a rare breed of chicken that has black flesh and bones. They are considered to be healthier than white chicken. Seeing a portion of food in the black colour is typically considered burnt or simply not delicious. So, hearing about a delicacy of black chicken on my day trip to Yanggu, I was intrigued. I am not one to back down from a challenge and so I had to experience this.
There aren’t a lot of restaurants that serve this, after a long search, we made a reservation for 2:30 pm at Daewol Charcoal Fire Ogolgye.
The flesh of the chicken is served in a circular stainless bowl, along with side dishes such as radish and cucumber kimchi, anchovies, and green peppers. The chicken is then placed on a grill which is heated by hot charcoal to cook. The black chicken flesh is brought already seasoned with herbs.
After the chicken is cooked, you can start by using your chopstick to take the black flesh. At first, I was hesitant to eat but seeing my friends eat without batting an eyelid braced me up for the challenge. I must confess, it is tasty. After the barbeque, a big pot of soup (Ogolgyetang) was also served. I enjoyed the meal, even though it was my first time attempting this.
It was amazing to note that a lot of celebrities such as EXO also visited this restaurant to eat Ogolgye. This is an amazing place to eat black chicken, so if you ever in Yanggu, you should stop by.
