What do we truly know about Seoul and its history? Seoulโs history as a city stretches back over two thousand years, to the time of Three Kingdoms! It became the capital of the Joseon dynasty named Hanyang (or Hanseong) and got its present name only after World War II and Koreaโs liberation in 1945. And these are just some random facts! So, if you are eager to know more about the history of South Koreaโs capital, make sure to read on! These are the Top 4 museums in Seoul to visit if youโd like to learn more about the city.
Seoul Museum of History

The first place which you should visit is the Seoul Museum of History. There you can experience the past 600 years of Seoulโs history in detail. The exhibition has divided into 5 zones:
- Zone 1 opens up the Hanyang period of the Joseon Dynasty
- Zone 2 draws a picture of Seoul in its early period of modernization
- Zone 3 tells us about the lives of Seoul and its citizens during the Japanese Occupation
- Zone 4 examines the events following independence up until 2022
- The final, Zone 5, presents video and photography of present-day Seoul

At the Seoul Museum of History, you can experience every important period of the history of the city. Experiences come in the form of maps, drawings, clothes, and furniture.

What sparked my interest the most was the original panel door of Hanyang (16-17 centuries) and the exposition of a traditional Korean bar (์ ์ง) which was opened in 1965.

Also, the museum offers a special Panoramic theater where you can observe a highly realistic scale model (1,500:1) of Seoul city. The exhibition presents a birdโs-eye view of Seoul along with multimedia and intricate models.

Through these exhibitions, you can easily explore how the new capital and its city walls were built. They suffered during the Japanese Colonial period and after Liberation, then were rebuilt and restored. A virtual walk around the 18.627 km wall is also available for all visitors.
