The Best Universities for Studying Korean

If you want to study Korean in Korea the opportunities are endless. With so many universities for studying Korean, you may feel overwhelmed. But don’t worry, I will help you narrow down your options. Come with me! ♥

Introduction

Many foreigners are interested in attending universities for studying Korean. This is mainly because learning a new language in a country where you are constantly surrounded by it is the best way to be 100% immersed in the language. With so many people around the world now becoming interested in Korea and learning Korean, many universities have jumped in to fill the gap. There are now thousands of different language schools and courses for you to choose from.

However, I have narrowed your options down to 4 universities. You can use this information to analyze your options and start your search for the best Korean language course in Korea.

Studying Korean in Korea

The Korean language has been ranked as one of the most difficult languages ​​to learn by the Foreign Service Institute (FSI). But, it’s not impossible. The journey will be hard. You have to have a lot of patience and dedication to master Korean.

Seoul National University (SNU)

Seoul National University (SNU), offers a regular Korean language course. This course is called the Korean Language & Culture Program (KLCP).

The course has four admission periods, one for each season of the year.

You can choose which quarter you would like to start your studies. Then, sign up for classes. Classes are divided into levels 1 through 6 based on your mastery of the Korean language.

And of course, International students enrolled in the regular KELC course can live in one of SNU’s student residences. SNU has residences both on and off campus and in single or shared rooms depending on your desired price point.

Kookmin University

Kookmin University is also a great university for learning Korean located in Seoul. Plus, it has a beautiful campus nestled right up against Bukhansan National Park.

It maintains a Korean Language Center, which currently welcomes approximately 1,800 students from 15 different countries interested in learning Korean. Kookmin University’s Korean Language Center offers two ways to learn Korean: through a regular course and a short-term program.

The regular ten-week course provides intensive instruction for students in Korean speaking, listening, writing, and reading skills at six levels. The levels are Beginner 1 &2, Intermediate 1 & 2, and Advanced 1 & 2.

Under the regular course, students have classes five days a week, four hours a day. Then, there is the short course. It is a three-week intensive program designed to teach students Korean and expose them to Korean culture in a short period of time.

Yonsei University

Next is Yonsei University, located in the center of Seoul, with its Korean Language Institute (KLI).

The study options at the Korean Language Institute offered by Yonsei University are extensive. They’re bound to have something that fits everyone’s schedules. Their Korean course offerings are as follows:

  • Regular Program
  • University Korean Program
  • Night Classes
  • Advanced Program
  • Special Summer Program
  • Intensive Three-week Program
  • Specially Commissioned Program (private companies or diplomatic missions in Korea)

Each program has different durations and pricing

The regular program is the most popular course they offer. It is structured much like the other regular programs. It offers 20 hours of classes a week at six different levels. However, with so many program offerings you can choose to start your studies when it’s most convenient for you.

Sahmyook University

Sahmyook University is located in the far north-east corner of Seoul. Despite being a bit more remote than the other schools, it is one of the top universities for studying Korean.

The University’s Korean language program takes a more rounded and fun approach to learning Korean. It helps students improve language skills through classes, cultural excursions, and a variety of different activities. The course also teaches you how to adapt to Korean culture quickly and smoothly through real-life scenarios.

Korean course registration takes place six times a year. Each course lasts six weeks and three days, so you can choose to start when the time is best for you. Classes are in the morning and are divided into six proficiency levels, from 1 to 6.
