Suncheonman Bay Wetland Reserve

Suncheon is a city in South Jeolla Province of South Korea. You can get to Suncheon easily from Seoul by convenient transportation. Suncheon is also known as a popular ecological city thank to Suncheonman Bay Wetland Reserve that was selected as one of the 100 must-visit spots in Korea fore 2019-2020 and take up place 42 in CNN’s 2019 list of 50 beautiful places to visit in Korea.  This place attracts so many tourists coming to enjoy nature. Suncheonman Bay Wetland Reserve with 75㎢ is one of the five greatest coastal wetlands in the world. Either spring, summer, autumn nor winter you will be attracted by beautiful scenery of Suncheonman Bay. Each season has its own color and its own special points.

Suncheonman Bay Wetland Reserve is known to contain the most rare bird species worldwide, which is the reason why visitors find their way to Suncheon non-stop. And it is also called home of bird by the following reason. There are so many kind of migratory birds which includes several endangered varieties stop at the bay along the way of their migratory routes. Some of migratory birds here are: mallard or wild duck, common shelduck, eurasian curlew, black-faced spoonbills, cattle egret, dunlin and white-naped crane.

One of the most famous thing at Suncheon Bay Wetland Reserve is the largest reed field in the country. In the spring and summer, this immense reed field is like a giant green tapis and it will turn to a beautiful dark yellow and bloom in autumn then light yellow one in the winter.

While walking along, don’t forget to look down to the sandbar. Here is home to a diverse variety of animals and plants and you may will find crabs and mudfishs.

If you want to get the whole view of this area, you will need to climb to the top of the mountain nearby. Just walk till the end of the reed road, you will across a little red suspension bridge.

After that is the way to the top of the mountain. One special thing that made me surprised at my last visit was that I saw a red crab crawling on the mountain.   

It will take you around 15-20 minutes to reach the top of the mountain but it’s worthy. You will get a beautiful panoramic view from here.

It’s not all about Wetland Reserve. You can take a boat tour to get around. And so that you will not only can enjoy the fresh air but also see so many kind of birds flying or looking for food.

If you decide to take a boat, you need to buy a boat tour ticket (7,000 won/adult). To buy a ticket, like when you take a cruise in Seoul or in every where else, you will need to fill the declaration paper and show the officer your passport or your alien card.

After exploring, you will get out by another gate that takes you to the souvenir store where you can find various super cute things in crab shape or mudfish shape.

There is a cafeteria that serve ice cream, snacks and drinks. You can come here to take a break during or after finish exploring Wetland Reserve.
