Seoullo 7017 was a place that I did not expect to like that much. But once my friend suggested going at night, it turned out to be my favorite spot in Seoul to just have a chill stroll at night time. Seoullo 7017 has three things that I love about an attraction: easy access, beautiful night lights, and free entrance.
History of Seoullo 7017
Seoullo 7017 is the new name for the Seoul Station overpass constructed in 1970. Due to heavy traffic in the area, the overpass made it easier for pedestrians to get across without having the trouble of traffic lights and sharing the space with vehicles. In 2006 the overpass was closed due to concerns regarding safety. But now, it has been revitalized into an amazing sky garden in the middle of the city.
The number 7017 represents this part of its history. The year 1970, when it was first built, and the year 2017 when it was reconstructed. The whole Seoullo 7017 project plans to improve areas surrounding Seoullo in the future.
The number 17 also refers to the number of pedestrian paths that it connects. Those paths easily take you from Seoul Station to Namdaemun Market and Shinsegae Department Store. All of this in less than 20 minutes.
Their roads also have concepts. In total there are five: Millidong Square, Hanyangdoseong-gil, Toegye-ro Square, Magnolia Square, and Rose Square.
Since it is a sky garden, many types of flowers and trees are displayed there. According to information written there are a total of 24000 seasonal plants and flowers at the spot.
Seoullo 7017 hosts multiple spots worth visiting. From cafes to traditional restaurants, I am sure you will be able to find something that suits your taste. Here is a list:
- Magnolia Cafe – Serves coffee, ice cream, and beverages
- Seoullo Information Center – tourist information about the overpass. Close by you can also find a gift shop with Seoullo 7017 merch
- Hydrangea Bread – Toasts and coffee
- Rose Bingsu – traditional shaved ice dessert
- Acorn Sweets – Some signature Seoullo desserts, including acorn sweets
- 7017 Seoullo Bibimbap – Bibimbap with craft beer.
- Seoullo’s Travellers Cafe – Tourist center with a cafe.
Seoul Station Rooftop Garden
Now here is my absolute favorite spot. The Seoul Station Rooftop Garden is amazingly gorgeous at night. The lights, plants, big space, and view all come together as the perfect night experience.
I spent hours there just watching the projection on the building in front of me. And I found out that the pathway from the Seoullo 7017 that leads to the rooftop recently (2020) opened, making it easier to access. In case you search for it in Korean, the name is 서울역 옥상정원.
If you do not enjoy parties, clubs, and packed streets at night, Seoullo 7017 is the perfect place to spend some night hours in Seoul. Especially the rooftop. It is not busy and gives you some great views of Seoul at night. This quickly became one of my favorite spots in Seoul and definitely, the reconstruction project did wonders for the night activities in the area.
