The Seosomun Shrine History Museum is one of the most remarkable museums I’ve visited since the architecture and art compliment each other so beautifully. This museum only opened in 2019 and isn’t well-known yet, but I’m sure it will be soon. This museum is located in Seosomun Historical Park.
Seosomun Historical Park
The park and museum are approximately a twenty-minute walk from Seoul Train Station or City Hall. This museum can readily combined with a visit to Namdaemun or Deoksugung Palace in Seoul.
Seosomun Shrine History Museum
Seosomun Museum is located beneath the park and is an exhibition space annex shrine, but it is also a gorgeous edifice with intriguing displays.
The museum’s entrance is a few stories below ground level. Although an elevator is available, the greatest views are obtained by going down the descending slope that leads to the golden sculpture in front of the entryway. While the open area in front of the door is spacious and welcomes sunlight, the corridor behind the entrance appears constrained and gloomy.
Another beautiful sight may be found on the lowest floor: the ceiling arches. The ceiling demands your attention when you gaze at the books and papers (religious and historical materials) on exhibit.
What makes this museum so amazing is that each area is unique and designed specifically for its purpose. The paintings and papers on show on this level complement the crypt-like atmosphere created by the ceiling. I get nostalgic as I go between the guys with bowed heads down. And I get sentimental when I look at the faces on the wall. The utilization of natural or artificial light, as well as the height of the ceiling in the alcoves, heightens the significance of the artworks.
This was also true in the Consolation Hall, where the lower roof obscured your view of what was going on inside. However, the open sky above the People on Feet in the courtyard allowed you to see daylight.
