Where to Play Golf in Korea

Golf is considered a sport for the wealthy and the elite in many countries. However, while golf is certainly enjoyed by the Korean upper class, it is not as expensive to play as you may have thought. There are actually many affordable ways to enjoy golf in South Korea. Let’s explore some of the convenient ways you can learn and enjoy golf in Korea!

Where to Play Golf in Korea

Golf Courses

Bright greens and rolling fairways. There are stunning golf courses all over the world and they are the traditional place to play golf, both competitively and for fun. However, finding a golf course is not an easy task, especially in Korea’s built up Metropolitan cities. If you are lucky enough to live close by, there are many golf courses located in the countryside. What’s more, you can even take lessons from an instructor at these places.

Here are just 2 of Korea’s most famous golf courses:

SKY72 @ Incheon International Airport

Sky72 is the ideal resort for foreign travellers, as English language and information are in abundance and discounts are available for new arrivals and upcoming departures. While they don’t offer lessons, they do have equipment available to rent, as well as multi-lingual caddies who can advise you on your game.

Address (Main): 392 Gonghangdong-ro, Unseo-dong, Jung-gu, Incheon
Facilities: Bada Course (18 Hole), Hanul Course (18 Hole), Driving Range, Private Golf Rooms

Nine Bridges, Jeju

Whether you’re a golf newbie or master, playing at one of the world’s top 100 golf courses must sound pretty cool right? If so, enjoy Nine Bridges on the beautiful island of Jeju. Consisting of 2 courses that loop around the western side of Mount. Hallasan, Nine Bridges attracts both domestic and foreign players. Additionally, you can take lessons here to improve your game, entirely in English

Address (Main): 34-156 Kwangpyong-ro, Anduk-myon, Seogwipo-si, Jeju Island
Facilities: Creek Course (9 Holes), Highland Course (9 Holes)

Whether you will need to provide your own equipment depends on your destination. Some golf courses offer club and equipment rental services while others do not. Therefore, it is definitely worth taking a look at the course website before your visit, especially if you are a beginner without a set of clubs. If you are going to be renting clubs, it is also worth noting that rental prices vary significantly between different sites. What’s more, there are some golf courses that will include club rental in the overall cost of use. If you are a beginner, I advise that you target these golf courses.

Virtual Golf

If you live in the city and are looking for something closer to home, there are private virtual golf rooms available in numerous shopping malls. These rooms are popular even with advanced players and present the opportunity to work on your skills in peace. While it may look like an arcade game, it is actually more in keeping with general practice. However, if you are a complete beginner, you may want to go along with a golf-savvy friend. It is almost impossible to learn how to play when you’re completely alone without a trainer. If you’re serious about learning, I highly recommend you make the trip to a real golf course first.

You can either bring your own equipment or rent when you arrive. However, as most customers here typically own their own golf set, not all virtual golf rooms provide equipment. I advise checking beforehand.

Additional Services

The services on offer at these private golf rooms are actually really great! The staff may provide you with complementary juice, biscuits and water, which you can enjoy with friends between rounds. Moreover, there are usually other snacks available that you should pay for.

Using the Room

These rooms typically contain a sofa, projector screen and fake grass to simulate the texture of a real course. When you first enter, you should type in players’ names on the screen using the remote control. After that, the screen will indicate each players’ turn and keep track of the scores, so get hitting!

Driving Range

Incidentally, many of the private golf rooms have a driving range attached as well. If you don’t want to play alone, the driving range is a great place to come. Depending on your learning style, you might benefit from watching other golfers and their techniques. However, you may need to pay extra to access this facility if you are heading there from the private rooms. The driving range is designed for golfers to practice their driving swings. While it is great to develop your swing, it is worth visiting a real course or a putting green to develop the other essential skills required of golf.
