The PC Bang is a favorite pastime of South Korea’s youth. At such a place fledglings can hone the skills needed to succeed in the new AI world, or just enjoy their free time.
The Devilish World of the PC Bang
Parents, in general, are in desperate need of a peaceful time, while in proximity to their children. This is only possible if children are exhausted from rigorous mental or physical engagement that is both safe and fun.
Such activity can be discovered in PC bangs. They are the mecca of all cutting-edge computers with worlds of imaginations unfathomable, where only ones with digital dexterities fit enough to be adept can survive. Please keep in mind that the following opinions are limited due to its writer being a bachelor – not a master. Thus, the extent of opinion, at best, is more likely to be that of an uncle than a parent.
It is true that many adults in Korea regret having wasted their precious time of youth having played computer games in PC bangs. One of these consequences is the incapability of matriculating to a university once dreamed of. Those devilish imagined worlds!
PC Bang and Survival
In this writer’s time, StarCraft, Diablos, Counter Six, Rainbow, and so on have become viral sensations, just to mention a few. Fortunately or not, having had to oscillate between continents for education, prevented one from being so heavily engaged in games. Although the university entered still did not very much improve, likely indicating obsession with games may not be the sole reason for one’s incompetency to get into a dream college.
Thus, allow me to advocate PC bangs. Have you noticed the mental rigors exerted to compete against players of the world? How about that precise and rapid finger-eye coordination required to command and control one’s own digits? And, what of that Herculean stamina and patience demanded to be seated in chairs for hours with concentration that seems to warp time and space? Where can a child better exert such traits needed for survival in the future while facing the challenges of the world than the PC bang?
Skills Learned
A personal example of my advantage acquired from playing games in a PC bang was that I once had to trim years of worth of experimental data in a neuroscientific lab I worked to obtain academic credit in college.
With the fast and efficient control of my mouse, I was able to finish the work within a few hours, whereas others with less efficient mouse control may have taken days or weeks. Such tedious, vexing, and unproductive work! Although the professor did not express any awes at the time, I certainly could feel his astonishment in silence.
Also, with the already upon us era of Artificial Intelligence, it seems to me that the engagement with mouse and keyboard shall rather be promoted than discouraged – even for leisure. You may be worried about undeveloped social skills if the time spent in games is immense. Well, worry not, for one’s inherent ability to acquaint with strangers will surface and be cultivated via players of the world, far outside of one’s tiny vicinity.
Leisure Time Spent
Also, if you happen to enjoy games too, you can also play the game with your child, which will allow you an insight into your child’s consciousness. His or her born tactical responses to threats or risks, the ability to strategize, plan, execute, retreat, reserve, distract, concentrate, and so on. Basically, you may be able to observe the broadest spectrum of your child’s psychological essentials panning out right in front of your eyes, while cultivating his or her fitness for digital, AI, or whatnot that will occupy a vast domain of future industry.
As long as your child can be bound by the limited time that you have conditioned before visiting PC bang, it is a good occasion to teach the disciplines of punctuality and responsibility. The child is likely to have acquired the skillsets required in the future while having exhausted his faculties in joy ready to fall asleep like a lamb afterward.
Thus, the PC bang is one of the places in the city where parents can have quality time with their children at the price of a few coffees.
