Have you ever received a gift certificate in Korea and don’t know how and where to use it? When I won in a contest organized by the Korean government, I was actually surprised to receive Onnuri Gift Certificates as the prize. I have never used them before so I didn’t have a clue how could I use it. But after thorough research and trying to use it personally, here are some of the things that I learned about it.
What is Onnuri Gift Certificate?
It can be a paper gift certificate, electronic gift certificate or mobile certificate. Moreover, it comes in three denominations – 5,000 Korean won, 10,000 Korean won and 30,000 Korean won.
Where to Use Onnuri Gift Certificate?
As previously mentioned, you can use Onnuri Gift Certificate at Korean traditional markets. So if there is a traditional market near you, you can try to use it from the stores there. However, not all stores in traditional market accept this gift certificate. To be sure which of them are affiliated stores of Onnuri GC, you can check this website and search for specific traditional market or specific store. You can also search by type of goods and area. Note that the website is in Korean but you can use translator to help you navigate the site.
For example, when I went to traditional markets in Eunhaeng-dong and Yuseong in Daejeon, I made sure to check first the list of stores that accept Onnuri Gift Certificate.
If you haven’t been to a Korean traditional market, make sure to visit the one in your area. You can find variety of things in it from fresh meat and vegetables, affordable clothes and home appliances, and many more. Using Onnuri Gift Certificate helps the small local vendors in the traditional markets amid the competition against large supermarkets.
I was even surprised that some stores in Daejeon Sky Road are accepting it too including restaurants, cosmetic shops, clothing stores and many more. I was able to buy new clothes on New Year’s day from SOUP and pay for our delicious meal at Parks Budae using it. In addition, I also used it to pay for my new pair of eye contact lenses. Aside from that, I also got to buy groceries from Taejeon Mart in Yuseong traditional market.
How to Use Onnuri Gift Certificate?
Once you have a list of the stores that accept Onnuri Gift Certificate in the traditional market that you plan to visit, then don’t hesitate to use it. But if you want to be sure if that store is indeed accepting it as payment, then you can ask them,
This simple sentence means, “Can I pay using Onnuri gift certificate?”
Another good thing of using this gift certificate is the Balance Cash Exchange. If you purchase more than 60% of the recommended amount (total purchase amount), you can get the balance back in cash. For example, you have to pay for an item worth 7,000 Korean won and you gave the 10,000 Onnuri GC, then the vendor will give you 3,000 Korean won in cash. Hence, if you receive this as a gift or contest prize, you can get as much as 40% of its cash equivalent by using it in affiliated stores.
