The winter is fast ending and spring is coming. Soon it will be summer and a time to hit the beaches. Last year, my cousin, my brother and I had the pleasure of surfing at surfyy beach, Yangyang. We went to Yangyang because it has some of the beautiful beaches in Korea. We also wanted the charm of the East sea in Gangwon-do and we wanted to heal by listening to the sound of the waves.
The surfyy beach is a surf-only beach located within Hajodae Beach which means it is exclusively for surfers. Since there are separate zones for surfers and swimmers, everyone gets to enjoy the blue ocean more safely. There are three zones consisting of; the swimming zone for swimmers; and the beanbag zone and the hammock zone for maximum relaxation.
Surfyy Beach offers quality surf lessons, surfboard rental services, shower facilities and lockers. During the summer season, the entire beach becomes a big party with trendy music and street performances, making it a perfect destination for young people who want to have fun on a summer night.
There is a “No Smoking. No Trash” sign. I like that the owners of the beach are environment conscious. We need to protect the oceans to enjoy them. Surfyy offers everything you need from surfing lessons to hiring board. Hammocks and bean bags are located all over the beach and there is a bar to chill. Even if you don’t want to swim or enjoy the water, Surfyy is a great place to relax on the beach with a beer. There are seating options for everyone and can be found around the main pavilion. There is a stream that runs nearby which is a suitable children’s playing area.
Changing rooms and showers can also be found on the beach. Showers and hoses are also available, giving you a place to wash the sand off before changing.
The beach is very well equipped and has everything that you might need to enjoy a day there. Restaurants and more cafes can also be found 10 minutes away in the township.
There is a Café on the beach. The cafe offers a variety of different drinks – both hot and cold. Further, it also offers some basic food options.
Lockers are also available if you book them in advance. They may also be available on the day depending on the crowds.
Address: 507 Junggwangjeong-ri, Hyeonbuk-myeon, Yangyang, Gangwon-do, South Korea.
Hajodae is about 2 hours 30 minutes away from Seoul and can be reached by bus. Buses run regularly from Seoul to Yangyang and can be found from many different services. You can check out Kobus or Trazy. The bus can take anywhere from two and a half hours to four hours depending on the traffic.
Once you arrive Yangyang, there are two options. You can take a taxi from the taxi stand (located right next to the bus stop) to Hajodae, which will cost about 12,000-20,000KRW. Or ride the local buses travelling from Yangyang to Hajodae. If you take a taxi, you can ask it to take you directly to Surfyy Beach. If you take the bus, it will stop by Hajodae. The good news, however, is that Surfyy is a short walk from Hajodae! Walking along the beach for 10-15 minutes will take you to Surfyy.
I tried surfing two years ago, but I couldn’t swim so I was always scared every time I went beyond. Although I’ve learned to swim now and I think I’m good, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. So my brother did it alone. The instructor explained the wave attitude and precautions. I practised and went into the water with my instructor, still, I couldn’t stand on the board easily. So I ended up watching my brother ride.
Besides surfing, the party at surfyy beach is also very popular but the bar wasn’t open when we visited there. Overall, I had a pleasant time there.
