The Story of School Uniforms in South Korea
School uniforms began to be worn in Korea at the time the missionaries built a school (ํ๋น; ๅญธๅ ) during the enlightenment period.
Having this in mind, the history of Korean school uniforms can be divided into about six periods.
In the 1800s, the first period, uniforms began to be worn at Ewha School and Baejae School. The second period was from 1910 to 1945, when the shape of school uniforms was changed from hanbok to suits.
The third period was from 1945 to 1968, during which middle and high school uniforms had the characteristics of each school.

In 1968, the fourth period, the uniform of middle schools in downtown Seoul was unified according to the ministryโs policy of equalizing middle schools, which expanded nationwide.
In the 1980s, the fifth period, a policy for autonomy of school uniforms was announced in 1982, which banned the designation of them as part of the transformation of educational goals for the development of autonomous sovereigns, and was implemented from 1983.
Therefore, the school uniform will be allowed to be worn only by students, parents, and local communities from September 1, 1986. That is why they announced the supplementary measures for self-regulation of school uniforms in October 1985. Since then, the number of schools wearing school uniforms increased, with 95.5% of middle and high schools nationwide (the statistics of the Ministry of Education, 1998.3). This is the sixth period.
We conclude that since the announcement of the school uniform liberalization policy in 1985, the students use school uniform from 1983 to 1985, at least during that period. School uniforms consisting of pants, short-sleeved shirts in summer and ties; jackets and pants during winter.
