Why celebrate a birthday when you can celebrate a whole birth-month? 2021 marks the 7th year of the most famous boyband on the planet, BTS, as well as the 26th birthday of Park Jimin. Jimin’s birthday celebrations have a reputation of being extra special, with even his fellow bandmates planning surprises for him in previous years. Let’s take a look at Jimin’s birthday celebrations in Seoul 2021 #JIMTOBER!
September is devoted to the birthdays of BTS members Jungkook and RM, while the entire month of October is JIMTOBER for Jimin. In 2020, fans created a huge display in Seoul for Jimin, complete with a giant bubble photozone and golden gifts. The inspiration for this came from Jimin’s live solo performance of Serendipity during the BTS world tour.
Of course, the fans didn’t stop there. In fact, it feels as though the enthusiasm for JIMTOBER increases year on year. Moreover, Jimin’s loyal fans organized an entire JIMTOBER festival in Myeongdong, Seoul, making him the first Korean idol to have his own festival.
In 2021, Jimin’s loyal fans have gone above and beyond, recruiting helicopters and planes for the birthday occasion. On the 13th October 2021 (Jimin’s birthday), the whole of South Korea became Jimin Land for the day. Shopping malls, subways and even airplanes were lined with his images and banners. BTS ARMY, you’ve outdone yourself this time!
One month prior to Jimin’s birthday, the preparations began and ARMY coined the month #JIMTOBER.
JIMTOBER Decor in Seoul city
When people walk through the streets of Seoul, they can’t ignore the advertisements for Jimin’s birthday. Due to COVID-19, fans couldn’t celebrate Jimin’s birthday in the way they usually do, but well-placed banners and pictures around the city allow us to celebrate even while we’re distanced from eachother. Additionally, many of the ads in Seoul were organized by ARMY from overseas, such as China and Taiwan.
My Serendipity Theme Park
The highlight of the JIMTOBER celebrations 2021 was definitely the ‘My Serendipity’ theme park event held by fanclubs ‘All For Jimin’ (@ALLFORJIMIN_KOR) and ‘Park JAMJAM’ (@parkjamjam_kr). The huge project was held at Common Ground, a popular shopping mall and exhibition space near Konkuk University. Furthermore, the ‘My Serendipity’ theme was reminiscent of how fans connected with Jimin through his song, ‘Serendipity.’
Common ground is one of the largest container pop-up spaces in the world and over 200 shipper containers were used for its construction. What’s more, covering an area of 5,400 sq. meters, it is the perfect spot to celebrate Jimin’s birthday.
Only in South Korea would you find a place like this. However, as if the common ground exhibition wasn’t enough, fans even sent gifts to BTS’ company as well. Therefore, if you find yourself in Korea during October, you’ll know whose face it is on the walls — if you didn’t already know!
If you’re not an idol fan, you might be wondering what the point of these huge events are? Well, other than to unite fans of Jimin, every fan project includes charitable ventures, like donating to Jimin or BTS’ loved charities, like UNICEF. Moreover, UNICEF presented Jimin with a certificate of appreciation.
This JIMTOBER, Jimin also received recognition from the Jeonnam Future Education ‘Hall of Fame’ and the Red Cross.
To that end, Jimin’s fans actively joined blood donation drives across Korea as a ‘good deed’ for his birthday.
