Hyangiram Hermitage (향일암, 向日庵) was founded in 644 A.D (The 13th year of Queen Seondeok’s reign) by the well-known monk Wonhyo, under the name of Wongtongam (圓通庵). However, in 958 A.D (The 9th year of King Gwangjong’s reign) it was renowned under the name of Geumoam, which means ”Iron Turtle Mountain”.
In the 13th year of King Heonjong (1849 AD), its name temporarily changed to Seokyukam (책육암, 策六庵).
책육 means to guard against the wrong behavior of the six muscles; the eyes, ears, nose, mouth, skin, and brain. It is also linked to the turtle faith.
Turtles have four legs, a neck, and a tail. This adds up to six. This is a comparison of a human’s six muscles, which means that we should be careful in our actions, just as a turtle that hides and save its body in times of emergency.
With this in mind, the name was changed once again, to Yeongwangam (靈龜庵). The reason is that it looks like the back of a turtle. Also because during the Japanese Colonial Period, a buddhist monk observed that there were turtle-shaped rocks near Hyangiram.
Nowadays, the rock that looked like a turtle’s back is now off-limits for travelers.
