How to Register for TOPIK in Korea – A Guide For Foreigners

If you are learning the Korean language and wants to assess your skills in terms of writing, reading and listening for academic or work purpose, then you should register for a TOPIK. This test stands for Test of Proficiency in Korean and is intended for non-native speakers of Korean, such as Korean language learners, international students who want to study in Korea as well as individuals who would like to work in Korean companies and public institutions.

What is TOPIK?

TOPIK is a written test designed to measure the ability of non-native speakers for expression and comprehension in the Korean language. Basically, this test is divided into two levels – TOPIK I and TOPIK II. TOPIK I is for the Beginner Level and you can get Level 1 or 2 based on your total score. While the TOPIK II for the Intermediate to Advanced Level is further divided into 4 categories: Level 3, 4, 5 and 6. The higher your score, the higher level you will get. Here is a table of levels with corresponding passing marks.

It is the National Institute for International Education (NIIED), under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, who is responsible for the management of the test, such as supervising institutions administering the test in domestic and overseas locations. But if you are in Korea, you can register for TOPIK through its website. Here is s step-by-step process on how you can register online.

Online Registration Process

Step 1. Create a TOPIK Account

The first thing that you have to do is to create an account at https://www.topik.go.kr and confirmed it via email. The website is in Korean therefore, unless your Korean is in the advanced level, you may have difficulties in navigating the site.

But you can use website translator on your laptop or mobile phones to automatically translate its contents. Though it is better to use a laptop when navigating the site. Also, you cannot register online using a mobile phone.

Step 2. Log in with your TOPIK account.

Once you have successfully created your account, try to log in using your details and double check the information you have provided during the registration.

Step 3. Register on the Designated Date and Time

On the day of the registration, make sure to log in 1 to 2 hours before the designated time. For example, if the registration starts at 10:00 AM, you must try to log in your TOPIK account as early as 8:00 AM. Once I tried to log in 1 hour before the registration and my queue number was around over thousands already. Remember, TOPIK only offers limited slot for exam takers so you must secure a slot as soon as you can. Most importantly, do not refresh the page and just wait for your turn or else you will end up queueing again.

Step 4. Select your Testing Venue and Test Type.

Before the date of online registration, make sure that you have already decided where do you want to take the TOPIK. Knowing the test venue in advance will make it easier for you to register. As much as possible, choose the venue that is closer to where you live but it is adviseable to have at least 3 more options. This is in case there will be no more slot in your chosen venue.

In addition to the venue, you must also choose your test type. As previously mentioned, there are two exam types: TOPIK I or TOPIK II. Assess yourself if your skill is for TOPIK I (Beginner) or you can already take the TOPIK II (Intermediate to Advanced).

Step 5. Upload your ID photo.

Next is uploading your photo. Make sure to prepare a 3x4cm clear and recognizable ID photo with a white background. It must also be taken within 3 months. Maximum size is 200 KB.

Step 6. Enter and submit your personal information.

Then you must enter and submit your application. Before submitting, make sure to check all your personal information and make sure that there are no wrong spellings or missing items.

Step 7. Pay for TOPIK application.

The last part of the registration is paying for the fee. For TOPIK I, the fee is 40,000 Korean won. While for TOPIK II, the fee is 55,000 Korean won. You can either pay using cards issued in Korea or you can opt to pay using bank transfer. For bank transfer, you will receive an email with the bank account details to where you should transfer or deposit your payment.
