It’s the most wonderful time of the year! All of the grass is dead, the trees are bare, and I think my nose is going to fall off. I don’t know about you, but one thing that always brightens this dreadful time of year for me is a dose of holiday spirit. The best place in Seoul to get your fix is, without a doubt, the European Christmas Market!
Overview of the European Christmas Market
The European Christmas market has been held annually for the past eleven years. It is hosted in collaboration with the Seoul Seongbuk District government and local European embassies.
This year, the embassies of Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Spain, and Hungary will be participating.
What to Do at the European Christmas Market
Visit Booths and Eat!
Each participating embassy sets up its own booth. At the embassy booths, you can get free items and learn a little bit more about each country and its holiday traditions. Additionally, each embassy invites local businesses that sell their country’s products to participate in the event as vendors.
For me, these vendor booths are the highlight of the European Christmas market. You can find things like genuine Belgian waffles, Spanish paella, Polish pierogis, and so much more! It is truly a foodie’s Christmas wish come true!
On a special note, for the sake of being eco-friendly, if you bring your own bowls or cups for food, you will receive a 500 Won discount.
There are also performances held on the main festival stage throughout the two days that the European Christmas Market are held. You can see all kinds of traditional singing and dancing from each of the participating countries. Of course, for those who really want to get into the Christmas spirit, there is also Christmas caroling.
This year there will also be some activities that you can participate in. There will be ornament-making and CPR training.
Where and When
The 11th annual European Christmas Market will be held on December 10th (Sat) and December 11th (Sun) of 2022 from noon until 7:00 PM.
