Gyeongpodae Pavilion (강릉 경포대)
Gyeongpodae Pavilion is a pavilion located on top of a small hill overlooking the Gyeongpoho Lake. Gyeongpodae Pavilion is one of the 8 scenic views of Gwandong (old name of Gangwon-do). It was designated as the sixth Gangwon-do cultural asset in recognition of its historical and architechture significance.
Gyeongpodae Pavilion is known to be originally built in the Goryeo Period. After relocating to the current location in Joseon Period, it went through multiple repairs. The structure is divided into 6 sections in the front and 5 sections at the side with 28 pillars surrounding the pavilion. Inside the pavilion, you can find poems written during the Joseon Dynasty.
There was an interesting saying in the past which is one can see the moon five times at Gyeongpodae. One sees the moon once in the sky, once reflected in the lake, once reflected in the sea, once reflected in the drinking glass, and once more in the eyes of a lover.
The “Jea il gang san (第一江山)” written inside pavilion is said to be Mibul’s writing or Ju Ji Beon but it is not accurate.

Tips on Traveling in Gangneung
Gangneung is really beautiful place, but it is a bit inconvenient to get around because there is no subway or train like Seoul. Buses and taxis are the two main public transportation you can reach here.
Do note that you have to check the operation timetable ahead for each bus. The time interval for the bus quite long so you have to manage the time for your trip wisely.
As for taxis, I highly recommend you to install Kakao T, a Korean transportation service application that provides taxi-hailing. You just need to search your destination and request a ride from your current position. The app helps to minimize inconvenience caused from the language barrier. Besides, you can also pay with a card or by cash.
Enjoy your trip!
