Dunsan-dong: Daejeon’s New Downtown Area

Are you planning a trip to Daejeon? Or are you doing anything but? You may have heard other Koreans describe Daejeon as boring, especially in comparison with the capital city of Seoul. While Daejeon is not as large and vibrant as Seoul, it has a unique charm unlike any other city in Korea. What’s more, I live in Daejeon and there is a plethora of hidden gems to experience. Let’s take a look at a popular are in central Daejeon: Dunsan-dong.

Daejeon and Dunsan-dong

Fun is subjective and so depending on your personality and what you consider fun, you may love or hate anywhere in Korea. When I first moved to Daejeon, I spent a lot of time in Eunhaeng-dong, location of the iconic Sky Road and underground shopping mall. Since then, my preferences have changed.

Fashion Shopping

One of the most iconic buildings in Dunsan-dong is the Galleria mall. Look familiar? The building is of a similar design to the flagship Galleria mall in Apgujeong-rodeo, Seoul. The Dunsan-dong Galleria Department Store Timeworld — its full name — is home to several luxury brands such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Estee Lauder.

If luxury is not in your budget, don’t worry — you can find high-street retailers like UNIQLO and H&M here too. Moreover, both have several floors so you can browse at your leisure for the perfect outfit.

Just be careful — there’s so many nice things on offer you might end up walking away with more than you planned!

Food Shopping

Dunsan-dong is not just for fashion shopping either, it also has a range of grocery stores on offer too! Close by to the Galleria is a large Emart and No Brand; I often come here to buy my groceries for the week.

Wine and Dine

After shopping, why not enjoy a nice meal to finish the day? There are different cuisines available if you’re hungry. My friends and I went to Rolling Pasta, a pasta/pizza franchise near the Galleria. Rolling Pasta is a good choice for tasty food at an affordable price. There’s also bars nearby if you fancy an alcoholic drink or to sing your heart out in noraebang (karaoke room.)

Strike a Pose at the Photo Studio

Finally, one of my favourite activities, making a keepsake memory at the photo studio. There are no staff, you simply head on in and do it yourself. For just 4,000 KRW you will get 4 strips of photos as the perfect souvenir. There are fun accessories and props you can use to make the perfect photo.

If photo studios aren’t your thing, there’s an arcade nearby instead.
