Downtowner: Most Popular Burger Joint in Seoul

Downtowner is one of my favorite burger chains in Korea and it is quickly becoming the trendiest burger spot of 2022. They offer elevated western-style burgers with a Korean twist. Not only are they delicious, but each menu item is also perfectly crafted to look amazing on your Instagram feed!

The Place

Downtowner currently has 8 locations. Each restaurant is strategically located in trendy neighborhoods in Seoul (Seongsu, Hongdae, Itaewon, Apgujeong, Jamsil, etc.), Jeju, and Suwon. Each of their locations has a simple but nostalgic feel to it. However, the aesthetic varies a bit by location to match the vibe of the neighborhood they are in.

For example, Downtowner Hannam is located in a less jammed part of Itaewon. This is the main area in Seoul known for its foreign community. And, compared to other locations it has more of a classic western burger joint feel to it.

In contrast, their location in Anguk, a traditional neighborhood, is inside of a Hanok building. The interior design is much darker and has a more ‘modern meets tradition’ vibe to it. The booths and metal chairs seen at the Hanam location are instead replaced by dark natural wood furniture. At each location you go to, you will be met with a unique aesthetic.

Although there are many locations and it is a growing burger chain, every Downtowner location continues to be packed. If you visit any of their locations during peak hours, you will have to wait in line, possibly for a few hours. So, if it is possible, it is best to visit Downtowner during off-hours.

The Burgers and Side Dishes

Now let’s go for the main part: their burgers! I heard that all of them were great, and they did in fact taste fresh. My favorite out of everything I have tried so far is their Avocado Burger. The freshness of the avocado paired with ranch dressing on top of a juicy beef patty topped with American cheese was absolute perfection. Their sizes are honestly almost too much for me, which makes me like them even more.

They have quite a few different burger options. However, the top five most popular burgers are the following:

  1. Avocado Burger: 100% beef patty, American cheese, romaine lettuce, tomato, grilled onion, sliced avocado, and spicy ranch sauce. (9,800 Won)
  2. Bacon Cheese Burger: 100% beef patty, American cheese, romaine lettuce, tomato, grilled onion, bacon, house sauce. (8,300 Won)
  3. Cheese Burger: 100% beef patty, American cheese, romaine lettuce, tomato, grilled onion, house sauce. (7,300 Won)
  4. Shrimp Burger: 100% shrimp patty, cole slaw, sweet & spicy mayo. (9,800 Won)
  5. Truffle Burger: 100% beef patty, American cheese, grilled onion, bacon, truffle mayo (9,300 Won)

Chicken & Fries

For sides, they sell chicken and fries. Their standard wavy fries are 4,800 won per serving. For an additional price, you can have fries with toppings including; cheese, guacamole, spicy chipotle, garlic butter, truffle parmesan, and chili (5,800 – 7,300 Won). Alternatively, they also sell sweet potato fries (7,300 Won)

They offer three different chicken options. These options are General Tso, Basil Cream, and Hot & Spicy. Each is 7,800 won.

Normally, smaller Korean burger chains have just two standard soda options – Cola, and Sprite. However, Downtowner has a few unique options. Firstly, this is one of the few places in Korea where you can find Dr. Pepper. Plus, they also have Boylan root beer and cream soda!

Working Hours

Dowtowner is open daily, from 11:30 am to 9:30 pm (last order at 8:30 pm). But like I said before, there is almost always a line. So, either be ready to wait a little, or plan ahead and avoid peak hours.

Downtowner in Seoul is a nice burger place with a westernized taste. Their burgers are different and delicious, and I will most likely go back to try even more of the items on their menu. I am always craving good burgers in Korea, but a lot of the time what I order is not what I expected. This is not the case here, each time your burger really will look commercial-ready!
