Jongno

Jongno-gu, as the center of Seoul for the last 600 years since the transfer of the capital city to Hanyang after the establishment of the Joseon Dynasty, has been playing important roles as the heart of culture and administration and as No. 1 in the administrative rank among 25 offices in Seoul. The name Jongno originates from the bell tower with the bell to let the people know of the opening and closing hours of the Doseongmun Gate located at Jongno 1(il)-ga. The name Jongno, the street with the bell, was designated on April 1, 1943. Jongno-gu has many public organizations and is the central figure for politics, economics and culture. There is the milestone at the northeast of Sejongno, and all the milestones in the country originate from this milestone, implying that Jongno is the center of the country.
