Before coming to South Korea, we all went through google in hopes of getting more information. However, what you can find out there is either outdated or false. As i have been living here for more than 2 years, i got plenty of time to correct those misconceptions and myths about Korea.
1. There are no deodorants in Korea
The first myth about Korea is regarding deodorants! I saw plenty of articles saying that Koreans donโt wear deodorant, thus, it is not available here. But not all of it is true. Koreans apparently donโt sweat that much because of their genes, but thatโs not our topic today. Deodorants are available! Whether you go to Olive Young or Daiso, you can find plenty of em in different sizes and types. They even have refreshing deodorant wipes, which i highly recommend in summer.
2. There is no cheese in Korea
As an avid cheese eater, believe me if they had no cheese i wouldnโt be here. You can find cheese in different forms here whether in snacks, as a topping or in itโs original form.
I usually go to Shinsegaeโs cheese section, it is my heaven, i find there everything i need.
3. Dog meat
Our third and most popular myths about Korea concerns dog meat. When i was studying the Korean Language, our teacher explained to us that during the war, Koreans were very poor so they started to eat dogs out of necessity. However, it is not a common practice and has stopped. There are no restaurants that serve dogs, or at least not any that I have seen.
4. Korean men wear makeup
Sorry to break it to you, not everyone here looks like straight out of a Kpop Music Video. The younger generation does makeup but it is not that apparent in the older generation. But what i can say is that they are really into skincare and taking care of themselves, always dressed up.
5. It is not safe
With all the conflicts with the North, many tend to get scared of an invasion from that side. But believe me, no one gives a penny here about it. And no, you donโt risk to wander and end up in North Korea. You can still go to the Demilitarized zone if youโre curious but believe me youโre safe here.
