After living in Seoul for a year now, a really interesting and unique aspect of everyday life I discovered here is the cafe culture. Wherever you look you can find cafes to study, to play board games, to meet cute animals, and even more. During your stay in Seoul, don’t hesitate to enjoy these unique coffee shops! This time I would like to give you an insight on some of my favorite coffee shops and some unique cafes you probably cannot find anywhere else.
As amazing as it sounds, from dogs to sheep, and any other furry friends in your mind, in Seoul you can definitely find a cafe where you can spend some time with them. Usually there is an entrance fee of less than 10000₩ and once in, you can buy a drink for yourself while the animals approach you. Usually you can feed them and pet them, but always remember to be cautious. The following are the most famous animal cafes in the city!
- Meerkat Friends: 19-12, Wausan-ro 21-gil, Mapo-gu
- Thanks Nature Café: 10, Hongik-ro, Mapo-gu
- Dog Cafe Bulldozer: 12, Seolleung-ro 116-gil, Gangnam-gu
It is really likely that you have already heard about Kakao Friends. If you want to take the experience to a whole new level I totally recommend visiting the Ryan Cafe in Hongdae! You can enjoy a great variety of drinks, the cutest macarons and cake. Its located in the third floor of the store, downstairs you can shop for different souvenirs, from plushies to electronics inspired by these adorable characters.
Location: 162, Yanghwa-ro, Mapo-gu (Hongik University station exit 9)
If you enjoy themed cafes then this one is definitely for you. Inspired in the famous fairy tale character Moomin, it is the perfect place to take pictures and buy souvenirs.
Location: 110-3, Wausan-ro, Mapo-gu
If you are fan of SM groups like NCT or Red Velvet, you will definitely enjoy spending some time in this cafe. With themed pastries and drinks for each group, you can enjoy a great variety of milkshakes, cupcakes, ice cream, and more. If you are lucky enough you might even run into your favorite artist if they happen to be in the cafe as well!
Location: 648, Samseong-ro, Gangnam-gu (Cheongdam station exit 6)
While from the outside it looks like a super-cute vending machine, on the inside you will have the most amazing desserts. Zapangi is one of a kind cafe that you will surely enjoy.
Location: Mangwongdong 400-2, Mapo-gu
Not necessarily a cafe but definitely worth mentioning in this article. From the most adorable cocktails to a ball pit, Urban Space is the perfect place if you want “instagramable” pictures! You can find both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks so there is no need to worry. As for snacks, there are macarons, brownies, and even savory options like fries and chicken.
Location: 23, Myeongdong 10-gil, Jung-gu (Myeongdong station exit 9)
Haru and One Day
If you are into Kpop, you must know Super Junior’s Lee Donghae. He opened his own cafe in 2016 and I simply love it. The simple and minimalistic style of the cafe makes it one of my favorites when it comes to hanging out with friends and chilling. My recommendations for this cafe are the Earl Grey milk tea and the carrot cake.
Quick fun fact: Right across the street you can find Cube Entertainment (Seongsu station exit 1). You might as well take the chance and visit their cafe, 20 Space, to enjoy their artist themed drinks like BTOB’s slushie or Pentagon’s bubble tea.
Location: 92 Achasan-ro, Seongsu-dong 2-ga, Seongdond-gu (Seongsu station exit 4)
For Kpop fans…
It is well known around the Kpop community that fans around the globe get together to celebrate their idols’ birthdays. This is no exception here in Seoul. If there is something I have learnt after living in Seoul for a year, is that fans celebrate to another level. Cafes become gathering places for fans to get photocards and cup holders after purchasing idol-inspired beverages and desserts.
In order to find where you can celebrate, I recommend you to look for events on Twitter! A lot of fansites post announcements for the events weeks before the birthday, so you have enough time to prepare a schedule for as many cafes as you want to visit.
Here are some pictures of the free goodies I have been able to collect so far!
While visiting Seoul you should definitely live the cafe experience. Do not limit yourself with this list but discover new cafes in every corner!
