As far as prop shops go, there are none as modern and unique as RP. The place has made a name for itself among the hip and artistic young crowd in Seoul by stocking a highly-curated selection of curious knickknacks and pretty objects. All of which, of course, hail from independent artists and designers. A trip to RP always results in plenty of exclamations and a full camera roll. You can be sure everything will be captured for perpetuity.
RP First Impressions
Located on the second floor of a shop lot, just one door over from Home of Hai’s Seoul flagship store, RP can be hard to miss. But, you can keep an eye out for the silver posters dotting the place. Upon entering RP, the first thing most people see is the famous mirror directly to the right of the entrance.
A giant, 3D half-globe made out of shiny chrome and mounted to the wall, this is the view of RP that can usually be found on Instagram. Obviously, most visitors will not pass up the photo opportunity here. This curious mirror gives off an inverted fisheye lens effect.
What You Can Find at RP
As shops go, RP is a little on the smaller side. However, their stock rotates often. So, there is always plenty to see even if you’re a frequent patron here.
This time, electronic accessories filled the room. There were plenty of pretty griptoks shaped whimsically like glass marbles. as well as burnished silver ones that cast a funny reflection of the holder were laid out on display. There were also clear phone cases fringed at the bottom with strings of clear and silver beads.
Some of the staples were there too. Their classic roughly-shaped, handmade Nightfruiti cups, colored in unique patterns could be found. As well as a series of silver knickknack trays made by Shalom Club made to resemble things like hearts and Western boots.
There were also tiny handbags made of fur with a pearl strap and only the size of a finger, meant to store Airpods in. As well as candles shaped like couches, and soft, squishy mugs made from fabric.
RP refers to itself as an ‘art market’, and I couldn’t imagine anything more apt. Everything they sell is carefully made with care and pride. And – are all art pieces in their own right. The items they sell are good to decorate a space with or just to bring a little more happiness to your daily life. These whimsically inventive pieces serve just a little taste into Korea’s budding art market, and the people that appreciate them.
