When it comes to tonkatsu, everyone eats it differently and even some restaurants serve it in a special way. Some with yuzu, pink salt, secret sauce, etc.. Now, I encountered this new place whose specialty is truffle oil. Keep reading to learn more about it!
Finding Dongyang Katsu
Welcome to another segment of Behind The Rails!! Today I am going to introduce the restaurant Dongyang Katsu, which specializes, as the name says, in tonkatsu.
While doing more research on this place. I found out they have a video of how they prepare their dishes and plate them for serving. Anyways, the first branch opened in 2018 and nowadays it has 3 branches, one each in Haeundae, Changwon, and Masan.
Interior
The decor of the place looks a bit fancy and it combines a bit of tradition with modernity. At least the one in Haeundae has two seating options, either at a table or at the bar. The one in Haeundae is quite big and for serving you do not need to talk with the staff (perfect for my fellow introverted people).
The atmosphere is relaxed and made especially for you to enjoy your food. Plus, the staff are also friendly.
The Menu
They serve the original tonkatsu without sauce or anything on top. They have normal, soft, mixed, and mixed with shrimp options. You can also choose to have it with a side dish if you want to.
Among the side dishes, you will find curry, soba, donburi, and udon. Each option is prepared in a different way. Or if you feel like it, sandwich tonkatsu is also available to order.
For the small side dishes. If you are like me and cannot eat tonkatsu with another dish, you can ask for a small plate of curry (the curry alone) for you to dip your food in. Other sides are cheese fondue, chicken kara-age, and fried shrimp.
Truffle Katsu Review
Just like any other tonkatsu plate, Dongyang Katsu serves its dishes with a cabbage salad, rice, miso soup, kimchi, and radish. The thing that makes the difference in the plate is the small portion of truffle oil for you to dip your food in. I know that some people may not like the truffle flavor, but I recognize that I cannot have too much of it since it is strong. Yet it is just the perfect ratio of oil and katsu it will not be overwhelming.
In case you donโt want to eat the truffle oil, do not worry about it! You can also eat it with salt, pepper, or their tonkatsu sauce.
For me, I mixed some salt and pepper with the oil and also used some curry on other pieces. But, I think it is best to enjoy this dish according to your tastes. Also! Do not forget to enjoy the rice plate. It is just really pretty to look at.
Disclaimer, in the case of ordering the katsu with udon, curry, or anything else, you wonโt have the rice plate.
Overall, you can enjoy a good meal here for less than 20,000 won per person (In case you order a simple set with no extras). It is worth the price to try it at least once.
