Today I will tell you the story of my girlfriend’s first time drinking in Gangnam. Unfortunately, not all nights out drinking with friends are fun. There are lots of dangerous situations that both men and women can find themselves in, as those around them may not always have the best intentions. While you are out enjoying Seoul’s reopening nightlife, please be cautious, regardless of your gender when you are drinking!
Unlimited Drinking
Because my girlfriend and her roommate had a class that day, they joined their other four a little late. Before the night out began, the other four girls arrived in Gangnam. They went out to eat first, and then my girlfriend and her roommate met them at a bar.
The girls had heard romours of a series of pubs that served unlimited drinks. For a one-time fee from 15,000 to 35,000 won, depending on the bar, they could drink as much as they liked. Some just sold shots, and others had a two-hour time limit. The one they chose sold standard cocktails such as Mojitos and the Malibu Oranges.
First Round: Just a Bit of Drinking
My girlfriend and her roommate pre-gamed to catch up with their friends. Finding the location where they would meet the four other friends wasn’t as easy as they’d hoped. The street was crowded, signs were too bright as their vision was blurred, and they didn’t know how to read Korean yet – all while tipsy.
After eventually reaching the bar, the group of six girls began to enjoy the evening. The night was still young, our dormitory had a 2 AM cerfuw. If you arrive late, you’re locked out until 5 AM. So, all of them had the intention of getting back early.
At the first bar, nothing noteworthy occurred. They were all having a good time, and several of them were already somewhat tipsy, making walking a bit difficult. Due to the covid-curfew, the unlimited bar closed at 9PM. However, the ladies still wanted to stroll around and drink more, so that is exactly what they did! They discovered a bar that was open until 10 PM.
Round Two: Harassment & Drinking
The second pub was not actually a bar. It was more of a restaurant that also sold alchol. But, there seemed to be more drinking than food. Perhaps they registered their buisness this way so that they wouldn’t have to abide by bars’ 9 PM cerfuew.
After a while, a group of guys approached them. The girls didn’t mind them much in general. However, it quickly became obvious that they did not have good intensions. They kept asking the girls if they wanted to come to their apartment to “have some fun”. The girls kept saying no, but they didn’t leave.
The girls told the guys directly that they had boyfriends and weren’t interested. But to that, the boys replied, “Well, he doesn’t have to know!” and “Since he’s not here, we’ll keep it a secret”. Two of the girls had decided to remain sober and they became very uncomfortable with the situation. The other four were oblivious to what was going on and were absorbed in the music.
Not long after, the bar-restaurant closed. Thankfully, they were able to get rid of the pesky group of men. But unfortunately, the story does not finish here.
A Turn for the Worst
After leaving the bar, they split up into two groups and interacted with others continuing their night partying in the street. Their chats were innocent and ordinary, in contrast to the situation inside.
However, to put it mildly, one girl in the group was extremely wasted. She started clinging to random guy and didn’t want to let him go. My girlfriend made a point of emphasizing the “hanging” part. She claimed that the girl had also fallen asleep on him. At the time, it was all in good humor. Everyone was having a good time despite the fact that it had started to rain.
During that time, my girlfriend and her roommate were fairly sober and attempted to gather everyone. They needed to get out of there as soon as possible to not miss the last subway of the night.
However, there was one major problem – one of the girls was missing.
