Have you ever heard Hoengseong city?
Today, I would like to introduce you a place where you might not heard before. It is Hoengseoung, which is a place that famous for its Korean beef (hanu) and red-bean-paste filling bread (jjinbbang). It is a county in Gangwon Province, South Korea.
Since it is located at around 100km from Seoul, it is quite impossible for you to travel there within one day with public transportation. I personally went there by joining a tour and I would like to recommend you some places that I found out interesting about there.
Pungsuwon Catholic Church
The first place I went was Pungsuwon Catholic Church.
Address: 30, Gyeonggang-ro yuhyeon 1-gil, Seowon-myeon, Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon-do
Pungsuwon is first catholic village in which over 40 faithful from Yongin (Gyeonggi-do). It is located right in front of mountains and therefore the scenery is really nice. It was a church back in 1907 and it still remains beautiful after 110 years. Due to that, it is a famous tourist site among people and some one of the popular drama scenes too!
Instead of entering the church, we had a walk at the mountain behind the church. It was like a small hike where we could see the whole church at the bottom of our legs. From there, we kept walking until we reached a small museum behind the catholic church. It was a museum where you can see various kinds of agricultural tools that used by ancient people. It is not big at all and you can finish seeing the whole place within ten minutes.
Besides the catholic church, there is a place where you can buy some local products like honey and other herbs. We got some coupons to use it at there and I bought some fresh vegetables seeds. It is a place where you buy and pay on your own as there is no any worker in charge there.
Hoengseong Lake Road
The second place where I would like to introduce is Hoengseong Lake Road.
Address: Hoengseong Lake, Daegwandae-ri, Gapcheon-myeon, Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon-do
Located at Daegwandae-ri, Gapcheon-myeon, Hoengseong Lake Road is a 27km-long road that has 6 routes around the beautiful Hoengseong Lake and the marvelous mountains nearby. It is a place where you can visit any season. Because it offers different kinds of views and it gives you great opportunity to stay nearer with the nature. You can visit there throughout the whole year unless there is some certain period where they limit people who enter it.
The day I went there was a cloudy and windy day. So, it was quite breezy and the lake looked so calm. The sky and the lake met each other at one line and it was a really breathtaking view. At first, I was still very excited to run here and there at the lake road. But after I walked for almost half an hour, it was so tiring that I wanted to quite the walk. But luckily the weather that day was super nice and I really enjoyed the lake view while I was walking.
What can you expect?
You can see a lot of people especially senior citizens who walk and jog at the path center early in the morning. As you walk along the path, you can see some small little hut where you can take a rest for a while if you are exhausted. I felt really happy to see those olders who were sitting at there, chitchatting with their partners. It made me realize that it is really important to take a break in our hectic lifestyle in order to gain a healthy and happy life.
After the walk, you can take a break at the cafes that are located beside the lake too! It does not serve too much variety of drinks, but it still helps to get away our thirst.
After finishing the walk, we went to a place where they served traditional korean food. As a Korean food lover, it was really delicious for me but it might be just a normal meal for you if you do not like Korean food.
Also, at that place, we had our handcrafts class. All of us were guided and asked to draw anything we like on a paper. Then they just used a machine to heat up the cup and paper to enable the drawing to stick on the cup. It was just a very simple activity and we managed to make our own cups.
Anheung Jjinppang Village
Next will be the third place that I would like to introduce to you. As I mentioned just now, Hoengseong is a place that popular with their red-bean-paste filling bread. So, it is actually a place called Anheung Jjinppang Village .
Address: 27, Anheung-ro, Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon-do
Jjinppang is a special product of Anheung , which is made of dough and red bean paste in it. It is very soft as its moisture is high, but it becomes harden when it cools down. Therefore it is better to eat it straight away after you buy it. It costs around 3000won for a few of them, but normally locals buy them in boxes to give it away to their friends or family. It is really a popular snack among the locals there.
Hoengseong city might not a city that is as advance as Seoul city, but it is surely a great place for you to have a relax holiday. I am sure you will fall in love with it once you explore the beauty of the city.
Enjoy and have fun!
