No matter if you come here as a student or as an employee for a big company, there are 6 things you must try once you arrive in Korea. They will definitely help you understand Korean culture better. Also, you will be able to create strong bonds with Korean people once you will learn more about the country’s history and cuisine.
First of all, be open-minded and try to have fun while discovering a new way of living in Korea. Be communicative and do your best to learn about people. Ask for help and don’t be afraid to admit when you don’t know something. When you are sincere and eager to learn, you will make friends fast. You will adapt fast. Korean people may be shy at first, but they are kind and don’t let you down. So, ready for a new adventure? Ready to try new things? Korea has a lot to offer.
6 things you must try when you visit Korea:
Bingsoo is a very popular dessert not only among Koreans, but among foreigners as well. It comes in a variety of flavors such as strawberry, blueberry, cheesecake, tiramisu or chocolate. You can also try the traditional one called pat-bingsoo, made with red bean paste. Basically, bingsoo is prepared using shaved ice, condensed milk, fruit syrup and chopped fruit or other toppings. You can find bingsoo almost everywhere in Korea. However, one of the most well-known chains that sell bingsoo is called “Sulbing”.
Have chimaek with friends
Chimaek comes from “chicken” and “maekju”, which means “beer” in Korean. Many Korean young people love spending their free time around Han river while having chimaek. I must admit that the fried chicken in Korea is one of the most delicious things I’ve ever tried. Especially yangnyeom chicken, seasoned with red pepper paste, garlic, sugar and many other spices. My favorite place for having fried chicken is Hongdae. There are many good restaurants that serve chicken and beer at a very reasonable price.
Buy cute socks
I was surprised to find out that socks in Korea are much cheaper than in my home country, compared to other things. Here, you can buy 1 pair of socks for only 1000-1500 won. Colorful, cheap, with BTS Jimin or EXO Chanyeol’s face printed on them, these socks can be the perfect gift for your friend. You can find a huge variety of socks in Myeongdong or Namdaemun Market. Or you can order them on the internet, if you don’t like to spend too much time outdoors, especially these days.
Go to Namsan Tower
Among the things you must try when you come to Korea there is, of course, visiting Namsan Tower. You may have seen the Namsan tower in various Korean dramas such as Boys over flowers. I suggest you go there during spring or summer evenings, with your significant other and watch the Seoul city lights together. The scenery is simply magnificent. Also, many couples choose to hang a padlock on the tower’s fence, symbolizing their never ending love and loyalty. If you are still single, don’t worry. Go to Namsan Tower by yourself and pray for a miracle haha. For more information about the Namsan Tower, click here.
Visit Hongdae Mural Street
Located next to the front gate of Hongik University, the mural street is actually an alley famous for its fun and colorful creations made by university students. Since I am interested in visual arts, once arrived in Korea, I decided to go there with one of my friends. At first, I wasn’t able to find the street even if I used Naver maps. It was a little bit confusing. After 15 mins of wandering the streets, I was able to find it. Even if it’s not that popular as Ewha Mural Village, this small area close to Hongik University is fun to look around and take artsy pictures.
Watch a traditional performance
If you say “Korea”, you say well-preserved traditions combined with modernity. When you come to Seoul, it is mandatory to visit at least one of the palaces included in UNESCO World Heritage List such as Gyeongbokgung or Chandeokgung. I visited both and it was a great experience. I also had the chance to watch a traditional performance while visiting Chandeokgung. This palace is considered to be one of the most authentic palaces in Korea, and has been praised for its architectural style. Chandeokgung can become a gate to an ancient world especially if you choose to visit at night, joining the Moonlight Tour. For more information, you can check this website.
