If you are a Kdrama fan, you have probably heard of Nami Island (남이섬) because it is the famous filming location of the hit Korean drama “Winter Sonata”. This island is so famous among locals and tourists and was selected as one of the ‘100 Must-Visit Spots in Korea’ for 2019-2020. CNN also listed it in the list of 50 beautiful places to visit in South Korea. However, it takes 2.5 hours from Seoul just to get to Nami Island. If you are still contemplating if it is worth it to go there then here are 5 reasons why you must visit Nami Island when you got to Korea.
1. Nami Island is a Country within a Country
Did you know that Nami Island is an independent country within Korea? It is officially called The Naminara Republic. It has its own diplomatic and cultural policies and is self-governing. The citizens of the island are called the Naminarians. It even has its own national flag with a moon and compass-shaped star portraying the Oriental sentiment and environmentally-friendly image of Nami Island. Just like other countries, they also have their national anthem and passport. How cool is that? So when you visit Nami Island, you are literally in another country within a country.
2. Nami Island is a Storybook Land
Nami Island has more than 20 gardens with unique stories to share with its visitors. They designed the concept of “Storybook Land, Song Island,” where they host over 600 performances, exhibitions and cultural festivals annually. Main cultural facilities include Song Museum, Picture Book Playground, Art Shop, and UNICEF Hall. It is a perfect place to visit any time of the year but it is most beautiful during autumn and winter season.
3. You Can Recreate Kdramas Scenes at Nami Island
Of course, one of the main reasons why you must visit Nami Island is to recreate scenes from your favorite Korea dramas that were filmed there. Since it was popularized by the drama Winter Sonata, they are installations within the island attributed to the drama.

5. Nami Island is an Inclusive Island
You may have seen a lot of romantic photos of Nami Island but it is not just for lovers. Naminara Republic is an inclusive island that welcomes everyone – single, couple, family, adult and kids. As a matter of fact, I’ve been there twice with my friends who are also single.
The UNICEF even designated it as a UNICEF Child-Friendly Theme Park in 2010. Aside from having couple, friends, family and child-friendly facilities and attractions, the island also has a Muslim prayer room and nursing room.
